Technical Expertise
Technical expertise is the examination conducted by a qualified expert, aimed at attributing a series of parameters to a precious item that characterize it from a constructive and aesthetic standpoint.
A correctly executed expertise is based on the analysis of gemological materials:
– Types of metals used
– Types of craftsmanship employed
– Historical dating
– Analysis of the state of wear
A technical expertise may or may not include an appraisal report. Generally, it is requested for a piece of jewelry or a gem that has never been appraised before and of which the owners or recipients (heirs, assignees, etc.) intend – or have the need – to know the value. It may also be requested to confirm or deny the value of a piece of jewelry or a gem years after its purchase or, in a dispute, whether judicial or extrajudicial, to establish the terms of compensation or fraud.
Appraisal Report
An appraisal report involves assigning a value to a precious item, based on real market conditions. Any appraisal that aims to be reliable must be founded on a correct technical expertise. Various market variables come into play in the evaluation, both related to materials and the type of craftsmanship.
It is also necessary to fix the appraisal at a specific date and indicate the reference market segment. Essentially, there are two types of appraisals:
1. Commercial Appraisal: average retail selling value
2. Asset Appraisal: value at the first level of commercialization (coincides with the value of materials plus the costs of recovering the materials themselves).

In setting
After completing all the previous phases, the goldsmith or the setter (the person responsible for placing gemstones on jewelry) is tasked with setting the previously chosen stones within the segments. It is a delicate phase that requires a great deal of experience and attention, to the extent that it demands many hours of meticulous and precise work.
Repairs
The repair of a family heirloom is one of the most requested services by our customers. At Caruso Jewelers in Naples, it is possible to carry out repairs, cleanings, and re-rodings to give new life to your precious items. The timelines and methods to meet customers’ requests vary depending on the modifications that the artisanal goldsmith workshop will need to make to the jewelry entrusted to them.
Customize Your Jewelry
It often happens that we receive specific requests from individuals who wish to discover if it’s possible to create a commissioned piece of jewelry—something unique in design, materials, and gemstones. Customizing jewelry is a task that requires experience and skill, time, and passion. However, it is the only way to obtain a uniquely crafted precious item. At Caruso Jewelers, we strongly believe that this is the true work of a jeweler: to create extraordinary jewelry with a unique beauty that is difficult to replicate.
Artisan Workshop
In the initial phase of creating a piece of jewelry, the customer’s preferences, desires, and what they truly want to achieve are clarified. In this case, jewelry is like a tailor shop for custom-made clothing: crafting a commissioned piece of jewelry is a tailor’s job. Subsequently, the measurements, weights, and design of the jewelry of one’s dreams are defined, and then the creation process begins. The realization involves a proper design phase and continues through meticulous craftsmanship.
Our artisan workshop is equipped with specific tools to create molds (waxes) based on the project agreed upon with the customer. This phase is not mandatory but is recommended for maximum precision in execution.
All the various segments of the jewelry in wax are then replaced by the chosen metal (Ag-Au-Pt) through a process called “lost wax casting.” The wax is placed in a mold, and the molten material is poured at high temperatures through a hole; the wax melts, and the chosen material takes its place in the jewelry.
